As I continue to recover from surgery, Nicky has not left my side except to go to school. My painful, inconvenient health problem has exposed what is most winsome in Nicky. He has very willingly and cheerfully brought me water, tea, conversation and snacks. Last night he slept on the floor next to my bed, “in case you need anything, mom.” He has even taken Justin’s temperature and brought him tissues, very sweetly admonishing Justin to blow his nose.
God is giving me a glimpse of the compassionate heart He has given my oldest son. Now, I am always teaching and talking with my boys on how to be like Jesus. But these past few days, I have seen a love, joy, goodness and gentleness beautifully expressed, in Nicky, that simply cannot be taught.
Even though I am still in a great deal of pain and Justin is lying sick with a bad cold at my side, I am thanking God for showing me His work in Nicky’s young heart. Experiencing this spirit of graciousness in Nicky, has given me a new joy and helped to overcome complaints that threaten to spill out.
I know these days in the canyon will pass. And I will be lifted to higher ground once again; stronger, with more will to persevere and praising God for His faithfulness.
I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord. Psalm 40:1-3
